About the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Established in 1976 as an expansion team in the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an interesting history. The Bucs went 0-14 in their first-ever season, earning them the nickname, the "Yuckaneers." Tampa Bay won just two games the following season, but then went on to make the playoffs in 1979, 1981 and 1982. Between 1983-1996, the Buccaneers failed to make the playoffs.
Tampa Bay's fortunes turned around in 1997, under head coach Tony Dungy. The Buccaneers made the playoffs in five of six seasons -- including four straight between 1999-2002. Dungy was relieved of his duties following the 2001 season, and the Bucs brought in Jon Gruden to be the team's head coach. Gruden made an immediate impact, leading the Buccaneers to their first-ever Super Bowl title in 2002.
Since Tampa Bay's Super Bowl victory, the Bucs have only qualified for the playoffs twice -- in 2005, and 2007. Now with an established head coach, new quarterback and excellent defense, the Buccaneers are ready to take the next step, and return as a dominant team in the NFC South.
