Snow Patrol's latest album Fallen Empires

Snow Patrol’s latest album, 2011’s Fallen Empires breaks new ground with club-friendly heavy electro and techno influenced songs and pounding melodies. Fallen Empires follows the platinum success of 2008’s A Hundred Millions Suns and 2009’s collection Up To Now. Snow Patrol added new member singer-songwriter Johnny McDaid during the recording of the album, which features longtime collaborator Garret ‘Jacknife’ Lee, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, US singer Lissie and Queens of The Stone Age guitarist, Troy Van Leeuwen.

About Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol has sold over 11 million albums and their albums have earned them nominations for the Mercury Music Prize, Grammys and MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2005, they won an Ivor Novello Award for Final Straw. Snow Patrol has won five Meteor Ireland Music Awards and has been nominated for three BRIT Awards. “Chasing Cars,” off the 2006 Eyes Open album, spent 104 weeks in the UK Top 75 and was voted song of the decade in a Channel 4 poll.

An alternative rock band from Bangor, Northern Ireland, Snow Patrol was formed at the University of Dundee in 1994 as an indie rock band called Shrug, with original members Gary Lightbody, Michael Morrison and Mark McClelland. Who would have guessed back then that tickets for Snow Patrol would be as hot as they are today! The name of the band was later changed to Polar Bear and then to Snow Patrol because of naming conflicts. The band currently includes singer Gary Lightbody, guitarist Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, drummer Jonny Quinn and keyboardist, Tom Simpson.

The band's first three records, 1997’s EP Starfighter Pilot, 1998’s Songs for Polarbears and 2001’s When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up were released by independent labels. After the band signed on to Polydor Records in 2002, they rose to national fame with their major label debut, 2003’s Final Straw, and Snow Patrol tickets really got popular. The album, along with the single "Run" put the band on the road to mainstream success as the record peaked at 3 in the UK Albums Chart. After the 2004 US release, Snow Patrol's Final Straw sold more than 250,000 copies in the states and become the 26th most popular album in the UK that year, adding to the already growing demand for tickets. Final Straw was certified 5 times platinum in the UK and sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.

In 2005 the band toured as an opening act on U2's Vertigo Tour in Europe and played at the worldwide benefit concert Live 8 in London. Snow Patrol's new version of John Lennon's "Isolation" was released in 2005 as part of the Amnesty International campaign Make Some Noise and later appeared on the 2007 John Lennon tribute album, Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.

2006’s Eyes Open album, with hit single “Chasing Cars,” propelled the band to international fame, selling more than 6 million copies worldwide and was the best-selling British album of the year. The single "Chasing Cars" played during an emotional scene of the second season finale of the television show Grey's Anatomy in 2006. Due to the surprising popularity of the song, it was released as an overlapping single and the video was re-recorded to include clips from the show. "Chasing Cars" was also nominated for a 2006 Grammy as “Best Single” and appeared on the season 12 finale of the television show ER. Snow Patrol's Eyes Open became the UK's best-selling album of the year with 1.6 million in sales in 2006, and reached platinum status in the US as well, selling more than 1,000,000 copies. Back home in Ireland, Eyes Open became one of the best selling albums of all time.

In 2008, A Hundred Million Suns was released with the first single entitled "Take Back the City" and Snow Patrol kicked off their Taking Back the Cities Tour in October. The band also released a compilation album featuring tracks from the band's 15 year history, Up to Now, in 2009, with thirty tracks spanning two CDs, including three original songs. The lead single, "Just Say Yes", was written by Lightbody and recorded by Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and X Factor star Diana Vickers.
