New Orleans to Host 2014 NBA All-Star Game
On the heels of hosting the 2013 Super Bowl, New Orleans is set to host the 63rd NBA All-Star game on Sunday, February 16, 2014. The game will be played at the New Orleans Arena, home of the new-look New Orleans Pelicans. This is the second time New Orleans has hosted the NBA All-Star weekend, which was last held in NOLA in 2008. Take in “The Big Easy" and some incredible basketball with tickets to the 2014 NBA All-Star Game and All-Star Weekend.
NBA All-Star Weekend
NBA All-Star Weekend includes a number of fun and exciting exhibition games and competitions featuring NBA players and alumni, WNBA players and the NBA Development League (D-League). From the fun All-Star Weekend Celebrity Game—featuring retired NBA players, WNBA players, athletes from other sports, musicians and actors—to the fan-favorite Slam Dunk Contest, there is plenty for basketball fans to cheer about.
2014 NBA All Star Game
The NBA All-Star Game is arguably the biggest crowd pleaser, pitting the star players from the Eastern Conference against the best of the Western Conference. With dance music and flashy lights accompanying player intros, plenty of alley oops and sensational slam dunks, and musical performances at half time, the Sunday match-up attracts a big audience.
Part of what drives the excitement of the All Star game is that the fans have the chance to vote for the starters of the game. Prior to 2013, fans selected two forwards and one center from each conference. In 2013, fans chose two guards and three frontcourt players. NBA coaches vote for the reserves—including two wildcards—but can’t chose players from their own team.
Future All Star Game Locations
New York City will host the NBA All-Star 2015 at Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Knicks. In 2016, Toronto is hosting the NBA All-Star Game. It will be the first time an NBA All-Star Game outside of the United States.
The West Wins the 2013 NBA All-Star Game
In 2013, the NBA All-Star Game was held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. LeBron James topped the ballots for the Eastern Conference. Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo completed the team, along with Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade, who were starters with James in the 2012 NBA All-Stars game. The Boston Celtics sent two players for the first time since 1983, when Larry Bird and Robert Parish were starters for the East.
Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers led all votes in 2013, earning a record 15th consecutive All-Star selection. With Bryant as guard for the Western Conference, Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul completed the starting team. Paul, of the Los Angeles Clippers, was the MVP of the game—with 20 points, 15 assists and four steals—leading the West to a win in the close All-Star Game, 143-138.
