Falstaff is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi and Arrigo Boito. After the success of his Macbeth and Otello, Verdi was eager to interpret another Shakespeare play for the opera. This time, though, he tackled The Merry Wives of Windsor, making his final opera out of 28 only his second comedy.
Falstaff premiered on February 9, 1893 at La Scala in Milan to huge success. Since then, it has earned its place in the repertoire of many opera companies. Buy Falstaff tickets now and experience the joy of this comic opera for yourself.Plot Synopsis:
Act I: Falstaff, a fat knight, asks his servants, Bardolfo and Pistola, to send love letters to two married women because he covets their husbands' money. When they refuse, he sends a page boy instead and argues with them about what honor is. When the women, Alice and Meg, receive the letters, they are furious, as are Bardolfo, Pistola, and Ford (Alice's husband), who they have told about the letters. As part of their plan for revenge, Mistress Quickly is asked to invite Falstaff to a rendezvous with Alice.
Act II: Bardolfo and Pistola feign regret at their past disagreements with Falstaff and Mistress Quickly makes him believe his plan is going perfectly. When Falstaff goes to Alice, Mistress Quickly announces the arrival of Ford, who has come to hang his wife's lover. After trying to hide in a hamper, Falstaff is thrown out into a ditch and humiliated.
Act III: After raising his spirits with some mulled wine, Falstaff once again meets Mistress Quickly, who convinces him to go to Herne's Oak dressed up as the Black Huntsman. While the men and women cook up a punishment for him, Ford's daughter, Nannetta, is promised to Dr. Caius, but Mistress Quickly overhears the exchange, knowing that she prefers Fenton, a servant of her father's. At Herne's Oak in Windsor Park, everything comes to a head as costumes lead to mistaken identities and misunderstandings lead to each man getting his due.
