About the Atlanta Hawks

Founded in 1946, the Atlanta Hawks are one of the oldest NBA franchises. Originally playing in the National Basketball League as the Buffalo Bisons, the Hawks moved to Illinois and became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The franchise joined the National Basketball Association in 1949, and just two years later, the Hawks moved to Wisconsin and became known as the Milwaukee Hawks.

Just four years later, the Hawks moved yet again -- this time to St. Louis. The Hawks stayed in the Gateway City between 1955-1968, and had plenty of success in St. Louis. The Hawks made four trips to the NBA finals while in St. Louis, and won the franchise's only NBA title in 1958.

Still, the Hawks weren't done moving. The Hawks moved for the final time from St. Louis to Atlanta in 1968. Since moving to Atlanta, the Hawks haven't returned to the NBA Finals, but, with the exception of the early aughts, have consistently qualified for the playoffs.
