Jean Genet's The Maids is based on the true story of the Papin sisters, French maids who murdered their employer’s wife and daughter in 1933, and is an attempt to analyze their psychology and motivations through his own fictional telling of the siblings’ class struggle. Genet’s version involves elaborate role-playing parts of the two main characters, Solange and Claire, who take turns exerting sadomasochistic power over the other as they pretend to both inhabit their wealthy Madame and plan her untimely demise.
