Elderly Carrie Watts wants to go visit the town where she grew up (Bountiful, Texas), but she seems to keep being prevented from leaving by her overprotective son and daughter-in-law, who don't want her to travel alone. She plans to sneak away, but finds that trains don't go there anymore. When she finally boards a bus to a town near Bountiful, she becomes close with a young woman travelling alone and confides in her stories of her youth and her lost loved ones. Though her son eventually catches up with her with the help of the police, her longing to see her childhood home moves the policeman to drive her there. But when she arrives, the town is not at all how she remembers it.
