The plot is based on the story of Joseph from the biblical Book of Genesis. It is framed in a story-telling format in which the Narrator tells Joseph's story, encouraging listeners to dream.
The main story begins with Jacob and his 12 sons, Joseph being the favorite. His brothers are all jealous of his coat, which indicates his father's preference for him. Joseph dreams that he is destined to be a ruler, but his envious and resentful brothers attempt to sabotage him, first by attempting to kill him, but ultimately by selling him as a slave to a group of passing strangers, who take him to Egypt. Once there, Joseph becomes the slave of the wealthy Potiphar and quickly rises up the ranks until he is running Potiphar's household. After a misunderstanding involving Potiphar's wife lands Joseph in jail, his incredible dream-interpreting skills are revealed. Once the Pharaoh, recently troubled by cryptic dreams, hears of Joseph's talent, he orders him to be brought to his court. After Joseph astoundingly interprets the Pharaoh's dream, he is recognized and greatly rewarded. When Joseph's treacherous brothers fall on hard times, Joseph certainly has the means to help them, but can their betrayal ever be forgiven?
