About Casting Crowns
The Casting Crowns are a Christian rock group originally from Daytona Beach, Florida. The group was started in 1999 by Mark Hall, youth pastor at the First Baptist Church in Daytona. He was joined by Juan Devevo and Hector Cervantes on guitar, Melodee DeVevo on violin, and Rob Cervantes on drums. Hall is the lead singer and songwriter of the group. In 2001 the Casting Crowns moved to Stockbridge, Georgia where they gained Chris Huffman on bass, Megan Garrett on keyboard, and Andy Williams on the drums.
The group released two independent albums which were a big hit in the Atlanta area. They went on to win Best Song and Best Artist in 2004 at the GMA regional songwriter competition at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Originally the Casting Crowns were not looking for a record label and were only interested in producing music independently. However Mark Miller, lead singer of the country group Sawyer Brown, discovered the band and signed them to his record label. They were the first group to be signed to Beach Street Records. Their self-titled album was released in 2003 and became one of the fastest selling debut albums in the Christian music genre. It was certified platinum in 2005.
The Casting Crowns went on to release Lifesong in 2005 and a live version of the album in 2006. The album debuted at number nine on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. They also released The Altar and the Door, in 2007 as well as a live version of the album in 2008. This album debuted at number two on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. After the album was released, the band went on a very successful tour and then went on to release their fourth studio album, Until the Whole World Hears, in 2009. It debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 list and sold over 167,000 copies within the first week. The album became the highest Christian album debut in history. In 2010, Casting Crowns won Artist of the Year at the Dove Awards.
The band continues to write and produce music, as well as tour. Four members are currently ministers in Georgia at the Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church. They balance touring, mentoring teenagers at the church, and playing during the church services on Sundays. The band has had a very successful career and continues to keep breaking musical records.
