About the Show:

The Iceman Cometh is a play by the great American playwright Eugene O'Neill. It expresses a deep cynicism with the American ideals of ambition and success and reveals a dark side of human behavior, that which is driven by greed, anger, bitterness, avoidance, and revenge. More so than many of O'Neill's other works, this play is a true tragedy rather than a melodrama. Written in 1939 and published in 1940, The Iceman Cometh finally premiered on Broadway on October 9, 1946 to mixed reviews, and several revivals have since been staged with varying degrees of success. Due to the intense emotions and backstories involved, it is an ambitious work to stage, but the payoff is huge when talented actors capture O'Neill's tortured characters. Plot Synopsis:

The action of The Iceman Cometh is set in 1912 in a New York City bar owned by Harry Hope; though he denies it, he has a habit of giving away free drinks. He has also shut himself up in his bar for the past 20 years since the death of his wife Bess, but vows to take a walk around the block tomorrow, his birthday. Over the course of the show, a series of drunks is introduced one by one. They carry out their pathetic, dead-end lives waiting for the semi-annual visits of the travelling salesman Theodore "Hickey" Hickman, whose visits usually turn into a party.

Joe Mott, the only African-American in the group, vows to one day re-open his black casino. Cecil "The Captain" Lewis, is a former British soldier who fought Piet "The General" Wetjoen, a Boer, during the Boer War; the two are now friends and vow to return to their native lands. Pat McGloin is a disgraced police lieutenant hoping to be reinstated. Rocky Pioggi, the night bartender, makes money by allowing prostitutes to sleep over in the bar, but hates being called a pimp. Ed Mosher, Harry's late wife's brother, made his living conning people and giving incorrect change as a circus box-office man; his shady dealings got him fired but he says he will return to work someday. Hugo Kalmar, frequently passed out, is a former editor of anarchist publications who quotes the Old Testament. James "Jimmy Tomorrow" Cameron constantly talks about getting his job as a newspaper correspondent back "tomorrow." Chuck Morello is the day bartender and boyfriend to Cora, a prostitute. He says he will marry her tomorrow.

Hickey finally arrives at the bar, but shocks the others by revealing that his life has been revolutionized by becoming sober. Furthermore, he wants to knock some truth into his friends' heads. But as the men work through their issues, resentments, and secrets, tensions run higher than ever. Get your The Iceman Cometh tickets today to watch the truth come out and discover how these damaged and deluded men come to terms with their own (and one another's) demons.
