Miguel Cotto, one of the best boxers in the world today, recently beating Sergio Martinez on Saturday, June 7, 2014, for the WBC Middleweight title. Cotto bounced back from two consecutive losses, losing to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout, with a knockout win over Delvin Rodriguez. Now in 2014, Cotto has his sights set on the WBC Middleweight belt -- and he'll fight Martinez at Madison Square Garden for it.
Cotto began his career with a perfect 32-0 record, before losing the WBA Welterweight title in 2008 after being knocked out by Antonio Margarito. Cotto rebounded with two straight victories, but then lost the WBO Welterweight title in 2009 to Manny Pacquiao. After his loss to Pacquiao, Cotto won three consecutive fights -- including a fight over Antonio Margarito. Cotto, however, dropped his next two fights to Mayweather and Trout, before rebounding with a knockout win over Delvin Rodriguez.
Cotto improved his overall record to an impressive 39-4 in his career.
Martinez takes a seven-fight winning streak into the title bout against Cotto. Martinez' last loss came in 2009, when he lost a non-title middleweight bought to Paul Williams. Since then, Martinez has defeated Kelly Pavlik, Paul Williams, Sergiy Dzinziruk, Darren Barker, Matthew Macklin, Julio Cesar Chavez and Martin Murray en route to the WBC Middleweight title.
