About the Show:

Harvey is a 1944 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase. The play premiered on Broadway on November 1, 1944 and proved to be a critical and popular success, running for an impressive 1,775 performances over more than four years. A London production opened in 1949 and a film version was made in 1950, starring James Stewart, who went on to reprise the role in a 1970 Broadway revival and a 1972 television movie adaptation. Plot Synopsis:

Elwood P. Dowd is an eccentric young man who claims to have an invisible friend, a six-foot-tall anthropomorphic rabbit named Harvey. He introduces Harvey to everyone he meets, much to the embarrassment of his reputation-minded sister, Veta. She decides that Elwood must be committed to a mental institution to spare her family, including her young daughter Myrtle Mae, from the humiliation he will surely bring to them.

When Veta and Elwood arrive at the institution, a misunderstanding causes Veta to be committed instead of Elwood. When the truth is discovered, a search is conducted for him, but he eventually proves all too easy to find when he returns to the sanitarium looking for Harvey, from whom he had apparently become separated. As they apprehend Elwood, it seems that his delusions have had an unpredictable and mysterious effect on the staff and on Veta; just before he is given a shot that will cure him of his wild imagination, Veta decides to keep Elwood the way he is, kind and oblivious, even if it means she must continue to live with Harvey.
