The show opens on an "average" morning in the Goodman house. Mother Diana waits up late for her mischievous son (yet favored child), Gabe, and tries to calm down her stressed-out, overachieving daughter, Natalie. Father Dan joins them as Diana is making lunch, but when she begins preparing sandwiches from the table to the chairs to the floor, everyone recognizes it as the sign of another episode. Over the next several weeks, Dan and Diana make frequent trips for treatment, from a drug regimen to hypnosis to electro-shock therapy, but nothing seems to be working well enough. Meanwhile, Natalie struggles with feeling invisible to her parents while making her way through a rocky relationship with her free-spirit boyfriend, Henry, and experimenting with some "treatments" of her own. How long can the Goodman family hold together in the face of these challenges?
