Evita is the powerful story of a powerful woman: Eva Peron, social and political leader and second wife to Argentinian president Juan Peron. Her meteoric rise to fame and power and her acquisition of a dedicated following are depicted with a sweeping score (by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Time Rice) and brilliant staging to create an emotionally gripping show. The title role catapulted the careers of stage legends Elaine Paige and Patti Lupone, and many songs have become musical theatre favorites, including "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored." The ballad "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" in particular has become nothing less than a pop culture phenomenon.
Originally debuting in London on June 21, 1978 and on Broadway on September 25, 1979, Evita ran for 2,900 and 1,567 performances, respectively. It landed an Olivier Award for Paige and an impressive 7 Tony Awards, including the coveted Best Book, Best Score, and Best Musical. It has since played all around the world, and its Spanish translation has been very successful in Spain and Latin America. Evita experienced a second wave of popularity and achieved notoriety among the non-theatre-going public with the 1994 release of the film adaptation starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. The curtain rises to reveal a cinema in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on July 26, 1952, where the people are watching a movie. An announcer interrupts with the news that first lady Eva Peron has died. The narrator, Che, comments on the sorrow that struck the nation and begins to tell Eva's story.
In 1934, at the age of 15, Eva meets and begins a relationship with the tango singer Agustin Magaldi. After she tags along with him to Buenos Aires, she sets her sights on becoming a famous actress and quickly dumps him. She then sleeps her way to the top, becoming a famous actress, model, and radio star. Meanwhile, a right-wing coup erupts and Juan Domingo Peron is introduced as a military colonel who is climbing up the political ladder. After an earthquake hits the town of San Juan, Peron appears at a charity concert, where he meets Eva. The two share a secret liaison and Eva tries to convince him that she could use her notoriety to help him rise to power. After she turns away Peron's mistress, she moves in with him and is thrust into high society, where she is dismissed by the upper class and the military leaders. In 1946, Peron launches his campaign for the presidency and he and Eva organize rallies to shore up public support. Meanwhile, Peron and his inner circle plan to eliminate anyone who opposes them.
Peron wins the presidency in a landslide victory. After he speaks to his "descamisados" (shirtless ones), Eva addresses her supporters and swears that though she once wanted only fame and fortune, her new goal is to help the people of her country. But fame proves a difficult thing to handle when Eva becomes obsessed with creating a glamorous image for herself in order to promote her and her husband's political success. The other world powers are unimpressed by her and though she does eventually start her promised charity work, controversy, including accusations of money laundering, tarnishes her reputation. Meanwhile, Peron's generals become fed up with Eva's interference in their operations and are especially annoyed when she insists on running for vice president. Is Peron's love and admiration enough to convince his advisors of Eva's value to their cause? A surprise illness may render the point moot as she struggles with establishing a legacy to her people.
