Born in Dallas Texas, Dunham began ventriloquism at the age of eight. Dunham did commercials for some car dealerships while he was still in high school, and while attending Baylor University, Dunham performed at private shows around the country, entertaining corporate customers. He landed spots as the opening act for comedians Bob Hope and George Burns, and in 1985, he joined the Broadway show Sugar Babies with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller. He gradually developed his act with characters like Peanut and Jose Jalapeno.
