Born in Dallas Texas, Dunham began ventriloquism at the age of eight. Dunham did commercials for some car dealerships while he was still in high school, and while attending Baylor University, Dunham performed at private shows around the country, entertaining corporate customers. He landed spots as the opening act for comedians Bob Hope and George Burns, and in 1985, he joined the Broadway show Sugar Babies with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller. He gradually developed his act with characters like Peanut and Jose Jalapeno. Dunham struggled for some time with his act, eventually moving out to Los Angeles where he eventually earned a steady slot at The Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. Walter is a retired, grumpy old man with a negative and sarcastic worldview and "doesn't give a damn" about anyone, especially his wife and certain audience members. Peanut is a hyperactive, purple-skinned "woozle" from a small Micronesian island and has been described as "the bad kid.” José is a talking jalapeno pepper on a stick who wears a small sombrero and usually pairs with Peanut, who often makes fun of him. Bubba J is a beer-drinking redneck that Dunham describes as “white trash trailer park” and loves drinking beer and NASCAR. Dunham’s “manager” Sweet Daddy Dee calls himself a "pimp", which he says stands for "Player In the Management Profession." Melvin wears a blue superhero costume and indicates that he has X-ray vision, adding, "I love looking at boobies!" Achmed is the skeletal corpse of an incompetent suicide bomber who often yells “Silence! I kill you!" to Dunham.
