Rodrigo y Gabriela, or “El Rodri y La Gabi” are a Mexican musical duo that specializes in playing fast, rhythmic acoustic guitars. The group consists of Rodrigo Sánchez on lead guitar and Gabriela Quintero on rhythm guitar. Rodrigo y Gabriela first met in Mexico City while playing in a thrash metal band called "Tierra Ácida," and list Metallica and other heavy metal bands as some of their influences. Frustrated with the local scene, they moved to Europe and began playing in pubs in Dublin, Ireland. They were eventually approached by Damien Rice and asked to play in the Irish music festival, Oxygen, and as a result played in festivals and shows throughout Europe. Rodrigo y Gabriela have released eight albums, Foc, re-Foc, Live in Manchester and Dublin, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Live in Japan, 11:11, Live in France, and Area 52.
The self-titled album Rodrigo y Gabriela entered the Irish Albums Chart at #1 and was released worldwide in 2006. The album includes covers of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica's "Orion.” After Rodrigo y Gabriela’s were featured on MTV, they became increasingly popular in the United States. Rodrigo y Gabriela performed an instrumental version of "Oogie Boogie's Song" on Nightmare Revisited, a tribute album to the music from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
After the release of the album 11:11, in 2009 Rodrigo y Gabriela increased their mainstream American popularity and their music was featured on Monday Night Football on October 12, 2009 for Latino Heritage Month. Their song "Santo Domingo" was chosen as the Starbucks iTunes Pick of the Week in 2009. The duo performed "Buster Voodoo" as the musical guest on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" in 2009, was also the musical guest on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in 2010 to promote their album 11:11. They also appeared on "Lopez Tonight” and in May 2010, Rodrigo y Gabriela performed in front of U.S. President Barack Obama. Rodrigo y Gabriela’s music also appears on the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and in the 2011 film Puss in Boots.
