About the Show:

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is widely regarded as one of the best contemporary American plays ever written and performed. After it debuted on Broadway on October 13, 1962, it won the Tony Award for Best Play and was selected for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, though the award was never given because the board deemed the play too controversial. The original Broadway cast featured George Grizzard (The Desperate Hours), Melinda Dillon (A Christmas Story), Arthur Hill (The Matchmaker), and the great acting legend and teacher Uta Hagen (The Seagull). Notable replacements included Eileen Fulton (TV's As the World Turns) and Elaine Stritch (Company).

The play, presented in three acts in around three hours, is a desirable project for many actors, due to the dramatic character work involved. There have been notable productions all over the country in recent years, including a 2005 Broadway revival starring Kathleen Turner (Romancing the Stone) and Bill Irwin (Waiting for Godot), who won a Tony for his portrayal of George, and a 2010 production by Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre, which transferred to Broadway in 2012. Plot Synopsis:

College professors George and Martha return to their home from a faculty party to entertain a young couple, Nick and Honey. During the get-together, Martha taunts and insults George mercilessly, emphasizing his faults and driving him out of the room. When Martha tells a particularly embarrassing story, George enters with a gun, which he shoots off, releasing an umbrella. Martha is undeterred, continuing her attacks until George starts to react violently and Honey rushes to the bathroom to vomit.

When Nick and George are left alone together, Nick starts talking about Honey's hysterical pregnancy before George tells him a series of disturbing stories about a former classmate of his who had accidentally killed his mother and gone crazy. George begins to insult Nick, telling him he is smug before the ladies rejoin them. When Martha begins disgracing George by telling the story of his failed novel, he grabs her by the throat and nearly chokes her to death. In response to Martha's cruel game, George begins to pull the guests into the festivities, mocking Honey until she feels sick again and leading Martha to seduce Nick in front of him. As Martha and Nick walk upstairs and Honey returns, George resolves to get back at his wife by telling her that their son has died.

When George comes to the front door with a bunch of snapdragons, he and Martha argue about whether the moon is up or down before the conversation turns to insulting Nick. For the night's final "game," George details his wife's overbearing treatment of their son and she accuses of ruining the talented boy's life. When he tells Martha that a messenger has brought news of their son's death, she screams and collapses, although it soon becomes obvious that they never had a son. Realizing what is happening, Nick and Honey leave as George sings "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?," with Martha replying "I am, George..I am."
