In New York, it’s World Series or bust, so the Yankees will be looking to avenge last seasons’ early exit from the playoffs. After a relatively quiet offseason, the 2011 American League East division winning New York Yankees will be looking to defend their title in 2012. Perhaps the biggest offseason move was a trade sending popular catcher Jesus Montero to the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Michael Pineda, unless you count the resigning of C.C. Sabathia as an acquisition. The Yanks also signed Hiroki Kiroda, a solid addition to their pitching staff. The 2012 New York Yankees lineup will be without catcher/DH Jorge Posada, who is hanging up the cleats after a long and successful career with the Bronx Bombers. When the Boston Red Sox come to Yankee Stadium in 2012, tickets will be among the most sought after. In 2012, the Boston Red Sox visit Yankee stadium in late July and the two bitter rivals close out the season in a three-game set in October, and the Yankees and Red Sox season-ending October tickets may be the biggest of 2012. While it’s hard to argue that the biggest draw at Yankee Stadium isn’t the home-team Yankees, Madonna recently announced a September appearance at Yankee Stadium in 2012. Coming off of her half-time performance at the 2012 Super Bowl, Madonna announced a world tour and tickets are selling like crazy.

Located in The Bronx, New York City, New York, the New Yankee Stadium or “The house that George built” replaced the previous Yankee Stadium that was built in 1923 across the street from the new one. Opening day at the New Yankee Stadium was April 2, 2009, a workout day in front of Yankee fans. The first pre-season spring training was a Chicago Cubs versus Yankees game won by New York, and the first regular season game was a New York Yankee loss to the Cleveland Indians. The new stadium borrowed some design elements from the historic previous Yankee Stadium, with construction beginning in 2006. With a $1.5 billion price tag, it is the most expensive baseball stadium ever built and the third most expensive stadium in the world behind Wembley Stadium in London and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During construction of the new Yankee Stadium, a construction worker and Boston Red Sox fan buried a David Ortiz jersey under the visitor’s dugout in an attempt to curse the Yankees, much like the “Curse of the Bambino” Babe Ruth curse that the Boston Red Sox shattered in 2004. The jersey was dug up after his co-workers exposed his plan. The New York Yankees seemed unfazed, winning the 2009 World Series, their first year in the new ballpark.

The interior of the stadium has increased space and amenities, and features a playing field that closely adheres to the old park. The new stadium features 4,300 club seats and 68 luxury suites. The exterior was made from Indiana Limsetone, granite and concrete and the interior is adorned with hundreds of photographs of Yankee history. The stadium also features the "Great Hall,” which contains 20 banners of past and present Yankees superstars, and Monument Park, which features the Yankees' retired numbers, monuments and plaques. The stadium also features the center field scoreboard, which is the third-largest high definition scoreboard in the world when it was built. The New York Yankees museum displays Yankee memorabilia, including an autographed “Ball Wall” of former Yankee greats. The new Yankee Stadium also offers a wide range of culinary delights not typically seen at a sports stadium, including a Hard Rock Café, a NYY Steak steakhouse and even sushi.

Other 2014 Events and Concerts at Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium is not just limited to just New York Yankees baseball. It has hosted epic boxing events like the 2010 “Stadium Slugfest” that saw Miguel Cotto, who faces Floyd Mayweather in 2012, defeat Yuri Foreman in a ninth-round TKO. The stadium has hosted the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, who played against Army in 2010. Other major events include the Pinstripe Bowl, an annual college football bowl. In another epic Boston Red Sox New York Yankee showdown, the two venues, Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium have fought to host the NHL Winter Classic, an annual outdoor hockey game, with the Red Sox winning the battle so far. Yankee Stadium has also hosted some mega-concerts like Jay-Z and Eminem, who were the first concert performers in the stadium’s history. In 2011, Paul McCartney performed at Yankee Stadium, and thrash metal legends Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax performed together. 2012 highlights include Roger Waters, who will perform The Wall Live at Yankee Stadium on July 6, 2012, and Madonna’s September 6, 2012 stop at Yankee Stadium for her world tour.
