Manchester United Information

Whenever we think of the glamour and romance of English "football", the name Manchester United springs to mind. While it's true to say that England has other big clubs whose fans would do anything for soccer tickets, it is the men in red from Manchester with whom we most associate huge crowds, electric atmosphere, and multi-million dollar stars.

England's Premier League is the oldest in the world, and many epic battles between the world's top soccer teams have occurred on these green and pleasant football pitches. Teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal, and the mighty Liverpool, have all made their claims for supremacy in recent years, but it has been United who have dominated. From humble beginnings, the club rose to global prominence, with an estimated 50 million Manchester United ticket-hungry supporters worldwide.

Tickets to Manchester United games bring more money than most of the rest of the English Premier League combined, and the city has a great reputation as a soccer-crazy place, where the subject is never far from its inhabitants' lips, in the myriad pubs and thoroughfares where soccer fans have thronged for generations. Manchester United tickets provide a gateway to the almost surreal world of Old Trafford, the most famous and revered club stadium in the UK. It is a perennial goal for fans of other clubs to visit this Mecca of English soccer, to drink in the special sounds and feelings produced by the largest soccer following in the world. A trip to Old Trafford is like a trip to no other stadium in Britain, whose parallels are only found in places like Italy and Argentina, where the large scale theater, with the many tiers packed with fans and awash with flags and banners, transport the soccer fan to another world; the world of Manchester soccer.

Manchester United Football Club began life in 1878 as a humble group of workmen from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath, in the then grimy north of the city. The team wore green and gold uniforms, and played on a small, semi-cinder "croft", not even a real field. In the early 20th century, Newton Heath, as the club was originally known, almost went into liquidation, and they hung on by the skin of their teeth through some rough years. In the nick of time, Newton Heath received urgently needed cash injections from local business, and they decided to rename themselves to mark this capitalist aided transformation. Manchester United was born amid the caustic grey of England's industrial heartland, and like a holy thing sprung from the furnaces of a William Blake poem, the shining boys in red and white took the soccer world by storm.

In the early 1950s, United's manager, Matt Busby, began to construct a team from an untraditional perspective; Busby fielded youth rather than experience, and the side which came to be called The Busby Babes slowly galvanized into the most skillful and exciting football team in the football world. Players like Roger Byrne, Bill Foulkes, and Dennis Viollet, swept into the public eye, and their enthusiasm and love of the game knew no bounds. Above them all was a youngster called Duncan Edwards, a big young man with the stamina of a wild animal and the touch of a prince. People swooned at the possibilities these young lads held in store, and the whole world licked its lips in anticipation, as the side gathered momentum and prepared to take on the best Europe had to offer. But then disaster struck.

On February 6, 1958, a plane packed with some of the most gifted young footballers on the planet, crashed in poor weather at Munich, and the group of lads known as The Busby Babes played no more. The manager, Matt Busby, along with several other members of staff, were also involved, and Manchester United lay in tatters in the Munich snow, once again hanging by a thread for its existence.

The rest, as they say, is history. United went on to many triumphs and the club became the best-loved in the world. Numerous FA Cups, Premier League Championships, and European silverware have glittered in the Old Trafford trophy cabinet, and the legions of crazy fans have swelled beyond belief. More recently, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has brought a new glamour to the club, with the addition of many world-class soccer players and extensive reconstruction to their space-age stadium, known as The Theater of Dreams.
