About the Theatre:

Designed by architect Henry B. Herts, the Longacre Theatre was named for Longacre Square, the original name for Times Square. The construction was financed by manager/promoter Harry Frazee, the owner of the Boston Red Sox who sold Babe Ruth's contract to the New York Yankees to finance his theatrical endeavors. Some say this decision a curse on the theatre that dooms its productions, but many have been quite successful there. The Longacre opened in 1913 and the Shuberts bought it in 1919. Aside from the period from 1943-1953, when it operated as a radio and television studio, it has been in consistent legit use since its opening. Some notable shows to play the Longacre include the 1977 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, the successful 2008 production of Boeing-Boeing, and the hit 2010 revival of La Cage aux Folles, starring Kelsey Grammer (TV's Frasier) and English actor Douglas Hodge, who won a Tony Award for his performance. Other notable Tony winners from shows that played at the Longacre include Julie Harris (1955's The Lark and 1976's The Belle of Amherst), Zero Mostel (1961's Rhinoceros), Hal Holbrook (1966's Mark Twain Tonight!), Rita Moreno (1975's The Ritz), Al Pacino (1977's The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel), Nell Carter (1978's Ain't Misbehavin'), John Rubinstein and Phyllis Frelich (1980's Children of a Lesser God), Stockard Channing (1985's A Day in the Death of Joe Egg), Diana Rigg (1994's Medea), and Bill Irwin (2005's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).
