Plot Synopsis:

Four Chicago real estate salesmen (Levene, Roma, Moss, and Aaronow) work with their supervisor (Williamson) selling undesirable properties at highly inflated prices. It is the end of a month in which Mitch and Murray, the company's bosses, have announced a sales contest in which the winner would receive a Cadillac and the two who sold the least would be fired. Roma is doing well, but the other three are becoming increasingly anxious.

In a Chinese restaurant near their office, Levene tries desperately to get Williamson to get him better sales leads, including flattery, bribes, and threats, but Williamson refuses to break company policy. Meanwhile, Moss and Aaronow discuss the unfair policies of the office. Moss suggests that they break into the office and steal the good leads for themselves, even going as far as blackmailing Aaronow in an attempt to get him to commit the crime. Later, Roma meets Lingk, his timid new client, and lectures him on morality and risk in a circuitous attempt to sell him some land.

The next day at the office, the burglary is discovered and is being investigated. Levene is happy because he has finally made a big sale and Roma is crestfallen when Lingk enters to cancel their arrangement on the request of his wife. Roma almost convinces him to rethink his decision, but accidentally Williamson ruins the ruse. Roma yells at Williamson and Levene begins to join in until he unwittingly incriminates himself. As Williamson begins to accuse him of robbing the office, he admits that he and Moss committed the crime. While Levene tries to bribe Williamson with half of his future sales, Williamson reveals that his latest sale is really worthless because the couple is crazy and merely enjoys talking to salesmen.

When Roma emerges from his interrogation, Williamson leaves to talk to the detective. Roma proposes that Levene work with him until the detective opens the door and demands to see Levene. Unaware of Levene's fate, Roma reveals his motives for the partnership. He orders Williamson to continue handing him the best leads and to add half of Levene's commissions. Aaranow enters the office wondering if they have found the perpetrator. Roma says no and leaves for the restaurant.
