About the Show:

Jekyll & Hyde is a stage musical with music by Frank Wildhorn, a book by Leslie Bricusse, and lyrics by Wildhorn, Bricusse, and Steve Cuden. It is based on the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island). It follows the troubled Dr. Jekyll as he struggles with experimentation that unleashes a brutal alter-ego and endangers all those around him. The score features such memorable songs as "In His Eyes," and the inspirational ballad "This is the Moment," which, in addition to becoming a Broadway standard, was twice performed at The Olympics.

Jekyll & Hyde had a long road to Broadway, first being produced as a concept album starring Colm Wilkinson (Les Miserables) and at several regional venues including Houston's Alley Theatre and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre. It finally opened at Broadway's Plymouth Theatre on April 28, 1997 and played a considerable 1,543 performances and 44 previews. The original Broadway cast featured Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll/Hyde), Linda Eder (Lucy), and Christiane Noll (Emma). The show received mixed reviews but proved to be a fan favorite. However, despite its longevity, the original production still failed to recoup its initial investment.

Following its closing, Jekyll & Hyde toured the US and the UK (and has been produced at regional theatres). Notable actors to star in professional productions include Jack Wagner, Sebastian Bach, David Hasselhoff, Kate Shindle, and Kelli O'Hara. Notable ensemble members include Broadway favorites Emily Skinner (Side Show), Brad Oscar (The Producers), and Heidi Blickenstaff ([title of show]). A US tour beginning in fall 2012 and ending in a spring 2013 Broadway revival was announced, with American Idol veteran Constantine Maroulis (Rock of Ages) to star in the title role. Plot Synopsis:

Dr. Henry Jekyll sits beside his mentally ill father in the asylum with the belief that the evil in his soul has caused him to have this affliction. He vows to find a way to separate the evil in people from the good. Some time later, Jekyll presents a research proposal at St. Jude's Hospital, but the board rejects his course as crazy and heretical, with only one abstention, Sir Danvers. Despite their negativity, Jekyll's friend, Utterson, tells him to follow his passion.

Later that night, Sir Danvers throws a lavish engagement party for his daughter, Emma's marriage to Dr. Jekyll. The guests worry that Emma is about to marry a madman, but she and her father dismiss them. Stride, who loves Emma, tries to talk her out of the marriage to Jekyll, but she refuses to relent, telling him she can be herself with him. Jekyll arrives (late as always) and shares a tender moment with Emma. He warns that he may often be busy with work, but she promises to stand by him.

Later on at the "Red Rat," Jekyll celebrates at his bachelor party. When the vexing prostitute Lucy Harris arrives late, her boss, the "Spider" slaps her across the face and threatens to kill her if she ever does it again. When she approaches Jekyll, they connect in a profound way and Jekyll offers to help her if she ever needs a friend. Once back home, Jekyll dismisses his friend Utterson and his butler, Poole and goes down to his laboratory. After mixing his formula, HJ7, he injects it into his subject: himself. He writhes in pain until he transforms into a dark form of himself and wanders the streets, having an encounter with Lucy and giving himself a name: Edward Hyde.

A week passes with no sign of Dr. Jekyll. One day, he finally emerges from his laboratory, looking terribly disheveled and distraught. He orders Poole to get him more chemicals and, when confronted by Utterson, evades his questions. He gives Utterson three letters to be opened should he disappear: one for Emma, one for Danvers, and one for Utterson himself. While Emma and Danvers argue about the prudence of her upcoming marriage, a bruised Lucy arrives at Jekyll's home. As he treats her, she says a man named Hyde did it. Lucy kisses Jekyll, but, terrified by his own actions, he leaves her. Later, the Bishop of Basingstoke is seen at the "Red Rat" paying for a rendezvous with a minor and scheduling another appointment. Once alone, Hyde beats and stabs the Bishop to death and sets his body on fire.

Clearly out of control in his evil form, Jekyll's chance at a normal, happy life seem to be slipping from his hands. Order your Jekyll & Hyde tickets to see how this tale of love, murder, and transformation turns out.
