The Chicago White Sox took a major step back in 2013, winning just 63 games, but are poised to take a major step forward in 2014, and return to contention. Led by ace Chris Sale, the White Sox boast one of baseball's most interesting teams in 2014, as the South Siders aim to return to their recent winning ways.

Chicago brought in a fair amount of young talent throughout the offseason -- and shored up the bullpen as well. The biggest move made by White Sox general manager Rick Hahn was undoubtedly signing Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu to a six-year, $68 million contract, which included a $10-million signing bonus. Whether or not Abreu's success in the Cuban league translates to success with the White Sox remains to be seen, but Chicago was willing to gamble on Abreu's skill-set.

While Abreu represents Chicago's biggest splash of the offseason, Hahn made another significant move -- a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chicago sent closer Addison Reed and Hector Santiago to the D-Backs in exchange for center fielder Adam Eaton and third baseman Matt Davidson. Eaton was injured for much of 2013, but, was a top 100 prospect entering the season, and should immediately provide the White Sox with an upgrade in center field. Davidson, 23, hit a respectable .280/.350/.481 in 115 games in AAA last season, and hit .237/.333/.434 in 76 major league at bats as well. Davidson should be Chicago's third baseman for the foreseeable future -- and profiles as an occasional All-Star.

The White Sox will need Chris Sale to have another Cy Young-esque season in 2014 if they are to seriously challenge the Detroit Tigers atop the AL Central. ZiPS projects Sale to pitch 204 and 1/3 innings, and to strike out 224 batters en route to a 3.17 ERA. If Sale meets his ZiPS projection, the White Sox will have, at the least, an opportunity to compete in 2014.
