Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a classic American dramatic play by Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar Named Desire, The Rose Tattoo, The Glass Menagerie). It concerns a dysfunctional Southern family and the events that transpire one evening at patriarch Big Daddy's birthday party. The evening spirals out of control, revealing secrets, lies, and desires.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof premiered on Broadway in 1955 and has been revived several times since, notably in 1974 starring Elizabeth Ashley (The Best Man), in 1990 starring Kathleen Turner (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), in 2003 starring Ashley Judd (Double Jeopardy), and in 2008 with an all-black cast featuring James Earl Jones (Driving Miss Daisy), Terrence Howard (Crash), Phylicia Rashad (A Raisin in the Sun), and Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls). The 2013 Broadway revival cast Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, A View from the Bridge) opposite Benjamin Walker (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). The Pollitt family is gathered at the home of cotton mogul and patriarch Big Daddy and matriarch Big Mama to celebrate his birthday and his return from a clinic with what he believes is a clean bill of health. But everyone other than Daddy and Mama know that Daddy has actually been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Margaret, usually called "Maggie" or "Maggie the Cat," has married into the wealthy family, but her relationship with her husband Brick is woefully unfulfilling. The two have not slept together in some time, which has put a strain on the marriage. Brick, a former football star, irks her by ignoring his brother Gooper's attempts at securing the family fortune, but he is especially disinterested since the recent traumatic suicide of his friend Skipper.
Throughout the evening, the entire family works through issues they have swept under the rug and emotions they have bottled up, including Brick's alcoholism and the nature of his relationship with Skipper. Brick insists that Maggie was jealous of their closeness, but he admits that Skipper had romantic feelings for him. Brick believes that rejecting him made him finally snap.
Fed up with the family's questioning and secretive behavior, Brick tells Daddy about his diagnosis. Daddy and Mama are devastated, and in a desperate attempt to secure Brick's inheritance, Maggie tells him she is pregnant. When they are finally alone together, Maggie shuts away the alcohol and tells Brick she will make the lie true.
