About the Theatre:

Designed by one of Broadway's leading architects, Herbert J. Krapp, and built by the Chanin brothers, this building opened in 1926 as the Mansfield Theatre, named after actor, director, writer and producer Richard Mansfield. It was purchased by Michael Myerberg in 1945, who leased it out to CBS TV in 1950. During the next several years, the theatre (then known as CBS Studio 59) hosted shows like What's My Line? and I've Got a Secret. It returned to legitimate theatrical use in 1960, when re-opened as the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, named after the New York Times theatre critic. The Nederlanders took part interest in 1967 and purchased it outright when Myerberg passed away in 1974. Over the years, the Brooks Atkinson theatre has hosted many prestigious revivals, including John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men and the musical Grease. It has also been the home of the Broadway premieres of recent shows such as Rock of Ages and Peter and the Starcatcher.
