Soccer: The World's Sport

After Italy claimed World Cup in 2006, everyone is concentrating on the club seasons before looking ahead to World Cup 2010. With the English Premiership, Spanish Primara Liga, Italian Serie A and American Major League Soccer (MLS) all in full swing, the options for soccer fans are endless.

From the world’s greatest cauldrons of effervescent atmosphere in Manchester, Milan, and Barcelona, to the energetic upstarts of the United States’ own Major League Soccer clubs, the game of futbol has proved a contagious and beautiful game across the teeming globe. Recently many American players have taken their gifts to Europe, especially England, and proved that they can compete on the world’s highest soccer stage. This is an exciting time for American soccer, and American soccer tickets are as much in demand today as they’ve ever been.

The recent addition of global star David Beckham to the Los Angeles Galaxy is a positive sign that European and South American hotshots are beginning to be drawn to the lifestyle and climate of the United States, and tickets to soccer games are being bought in unprecedented quantities!

The MLS is an unlikely beast, born in a nation of football, baseball, hockey, and basketball, but the truth that soccer is one of the world’s most exciting sports dawns, as American buy soccer tickets in their thousands. The 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States was said by many to be the best they’d ever seen, not just from a soccer standpoint but from an organizational one too. Tickets to American soccer games found themselves in the hands of the faithful from the world over, as well as tickets to soccer bought by curious Americans. It was in the wake of this resounding success that Major League Soccer in the USA emerged, but as the World Cup success receded in their collective memory, Americans once more made it difficult for soccer to take root in the national culture in any meaningful or enduring way. Among the stony ground and the pride in organizing a great tournament, the stirrings of Major League Soccer took form. The much loved coach Bruce Arena led DC United to a championship in three of the league's first four seasons, paving the way for his later time in the limelight as the national team coach, and the games were attended by variable numbers of people. Tickets to soccer games in America were a new phenomenon, but could it catch on?

The 1998 FIFA World Cup in France witnessed the United States national soccer team knocked out in the first round, finishing last out of all 32 countries present, and suddenly the MLS looked like a lame duck next to Europe and South America’s bristling athletes. The 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan/Korea saw the American team go all the way to the quarter-finals, where they played magnificently against Germany in a 1-0 defeat. It was to be a year or three before the trickle of America’s truest talent made its way to Europe, in the form of Claudio Reyna, Brian McBride, Tim Howard, and others.

The World Cup in Germany in 2006 saw a shock start by the USA, when they were unexpectedly smacked 3-0 by the Czech Republic, and their dream of continuing where they left off in 2002 was shattered overnight. A couple more disappointing results, a gallant 1-1 draw with Italy and a tempestuous 2-1 defeat to Ghana, saw the American national team go tumbling out at the first obstacle once again. The next World Cup in 2010 will prove to be something of an acid test for both the US national team and soccer in America in general.

Some of the major teams in contention for the MLS title are the Chicago Fire, FC Dallas and LA Galaxy. The arrival of David Beckham should give the league a huge boost and make tickets in high demand, so get yours now!
