So, I was sitting in a marketing meeting and we were discussing the top-grossing concert tours for the previous week. Most of the names were expected -- Bruce Springsteen, Luke Bryan, One Direction, Miley Cyrus. Then, I looked at the list and asked "Who the heck are '5 Seconds of Summer?'" Our concert experts had never heard of them, but their shows were selling out in minutes. I decided I had to educate myself about these guys.
When I opened the first couple of websites and magazine articles and saw the faces (and the hair) I thought, "Great. Another day spent listening to inane pop songs by a central-casting pretty-boy band and trying to find one that doesn't make me barf so that I can say something nice about it." Um...it turns out, none of them make me barf. I might have actually added one to a personal playlist. It turns out, these guys are actually good.

Why 5 Seconds of Summer is different than other Boy Bands
- They're from Australia
- They actually play the instruments.
- They appear to have no connection to Simon Cowell
- Did I mention Australia?
- They write a lot of their own songs.
- They met in school and formed a band organically, as opposed to being constructed by a producer.
- They did 100% of the promo for their first album on social media.
- Then, of course, there's the Australia thing.
To be fair, in some respects, they are like other boy bands: They're easy on the eyes. They're all still teenagers. They have a huge following of barely-post-adolescent girls who tweet and post pictures, statistics, factoids, gossip, videos, etc. And they got a nod from the current power-house of the OMG set when One Direction took the new wonders from down under along on part of their 2013 tour. The thing is, these guys have talent as well as teen appeal. I look forward to seeing what they do in the future.
