Before I moved to California, I would have told anyone who asked me that I hated country music. It wasn't true--there were songs recorded by what I considered rock artists that, in retrospect, I now realize are essentially country songs. I'm thinking of Eagles song like Lyin' Eyes and Peaceful Easy Feeling, or CCR's Looking Out My Back Door. I went so far as to listen to bands that had one foot in rock and the other in country, like The Marshall Tucker Band and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, without realizing the hypocrisy of my insistence that I hated country music.

Blame it All on Garth Brooks

Not long after the move, some friends invited me to the (sadly, now closed) Crazy Horse Steak House in Santa Ana, California. There were free dance lessons two nights a week and, as this was a couple of years before the ubiquitous line dance took over the dance floors, I found myself learning the two-step.

The two-step is a lot like bowling, in that it's a lot of fun even if you're terrible at it. The twice-weekly lessons became a regular habit, and I learned how to spin and swing with increasing degrees of competency. I also got a song completely stuck in my head. It was one of the dance instructor's favorite tunes for teaching new moves, because the beat was slow enough for beginners but fast enough that the more experienced dancers didn't get completely bored. The song was Garth Brooks' Two of a Kind (Working on a Full House), and I soon found myself scanning the radio stations, looking for one that might play this song, along with a few others that I found myself singing along with. The next thing I knew, "Go Country 105" was on my first pre-set button, and I knew all the words to pretty much every song.

Based on concert ticket sales (a statistic I'm in a unique position to know about), the rest of North America has caught up with me. George Strait's supposed farewell "The Cowboy Rides Away" tour has been a record-breaking success. Artists like Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts and Lady Antebellum lead the sales charts weekly, and up-and-comers including Florida George Line, Cole Swindell and Eric Church are climbing fast to meet them. And rumors of a 2014 Garth Brooks Tour make me a very happy woman indeed.

My current favorite country song is Compass by Lady Antebellum. I'm a sucker for a feel good song, and this one definitely falls into that category. Enjoy!
