Top Sporting Events of 2011

December 31, 2011

As we here at LiveToast are new to the blog game, and its the end of the year, I figure it's best to play by the unwritten rules of the internet and do a "best of" post. But since I have zero posts to highlight, instead were gonna look at the top sporting events of 2011 in terms of revenue. 2011 was TicketLiquidator's biggest year yet, with just under $100 million in sales and more than 700,000 transactions. The figures below are based on sales at TL over 2011, and the average ticket price is shown, but of course that is the average. No-doubt plenty of fans got into the game for much less. You have to take into account some of the premium tickets we sell that command a much higher price than your average ticket.

Unsurprisingly, the playoff games were big sellers, but you'd be surprised at some of the events that broke the top ten for their sport. In fact, the Manchester United vs FC Barcelona game (that's soccer for those not on the bandwagon yet) was the second-highest grossing sporting event on TicketLiquidator. And that's not the only soccer event in the top ten! So in terms of fans willing to pay a premium, it seems like soccer fans are eager to see top-tier soccer live. As you might guess, the Super Bowl was the biggest sporting event of the year, with an average ticket price of nearly $3,000. The following is a breakdown of the highest grossing sporting events on TicketLiquidator, in terms of total revenue, followed by the top sporting events by sport.

Top NFL Events

The Super Bowl and playoff games were in the top ten, but there were several regular-season games that came in ahead of playoff games. The 49ers have long had some of the NFL's deepest pockets, and the fact that two games at Candlestick Park brought in the most revenue is a testament to that. Of course the fan bases of their opponent, the Cowboys and Steelers, played a part in that as well!

Top MLB Events

The playoffs and Red Sox vs. Yankees dominate the MLB's highest grossing games of 2011. But in the past couple of years fans of the Texas Rangers have really stepped it up. The fact they repeated as the American League Champion certainly helped in that regard. And as they faced the Cardinals, who hail from baseball-crazy Saint Louis, the fact the World Series commanded much higher ticket prices is not surprising. Also not surprising is the fact that the Red Sox vs Yankees games were some of the most expensive tickets of the year. And it looks like Rockies fans were exited for the season, as they were the only team whose opening day matchup cracked the top ten (although the Red Sox home opener was the 9th high-grossing MLB game of 2011, little did they know...)

Top College football Events

You might think that the BCS Game would have been the top college football event of 2011, but it looks like the high price prevented enough sales to make it into the top ten. The first game of the college football season, the Cowboys Classic, was a big seller, as was the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game.

Top NCAA Basketball Events

You'd think the March Madness Tournament would be the biggest seller, and you'd be right. The problem is that TicketLiquidator sells their March Madness tickets in blocks, so you can enjoy several regional games. Additionally, Final Four tickets include tickets to the Championship Game. SO with this in mind we decided to leave the NCAA Tournament games out of the top 2011 NCAA basketball events.
