Two Boys

May 11, 2011

Twenty-nine-year-old composer Nico Muhly is the secret weapon behind some of the best Indie songs to come out over the past few years. Muhly’s pallet spans from haunting-elegiac to jubilant on choral and string arrangements for Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest, The National’s High Violet and Sigur Ros singer Jonsi’s Go. Muhly has played piano for Bjork and worked as an editor, conductor, and keyboardist for influential composer Philip Glass, and now his first opera, Two Boys, is about to premiere with the English National Opera before making its way stateside to the Met for the 2013 - 2014 season. The opera is based on the late 90s case of a boy assuming a false online identity in order to trick someone into killing him. The story has been adapted to include a chatroom-cybersex-spyring (how 2011). The first trailer illustrates the dangers that lurk online. The second appears to be a closed-circuit video of the murder taking place.
