Since its inception in 1998, every year the Bowl Championship System (BCS) creates a ton of controversy. Nobody seems completely satisfied with the way the ranking are ultimately decided. Critics have pointed to the unfair advantage it gives to certain conferences at the expense of others, meaning teams in some conferences can go undefeated with no chance of becoming a national champion. Utah's 2004 performance was a prime example of how this disparity may have prevented a team from ultimately receiving its due.
