About the Theatre:

The Gershwin Theatre was built in 1970 along with its smaller, adjoining sister theatre, the Circle in the Square. The Gershwin opened in 1972 as The Uris Theatre with a production called Via Galactica. It was renamed in 1983 after George Gershwin, the composer of such works as Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris, and Of Thee I Sing. Gershwin's songs are also featured in other musicals, such as Crazy for You and Nice Work If You Can Get It. In 2003, the theatre welcomed the blockbuster hit musical Wicked, which would prove its biggest, most enduring success. With the popularity that Wicked has gained, it's a good thing that the Gershwin has the highest seating capacity on Broadway.
