About Wolf Trap

The Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, or simply Wolf Trap, is located on 130 acres of national park land in Wolf Trap, Virginina. The venue offers a variety of entertainment options and is run through a partnership between the National Park Service and the Wolf Trap Foundation, a non-profit foundation. The Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is comprised of several elements. The Filene Center is a major indoor/outdoor venue with a capacity of 7,000, including a casual lawn area. Nightly performances from country to folk music to opera take place from May until early September. The Filene Center’s inaugural season began in 1971, and was built with state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment. The Barns at Wolf Trap is an indoor venue that operates year-round and offers a variety of entertainment with a capacity of 382. The Wolf Trap Opera Company, established in 1971, is an ensemble program for young opera singers. Its mission is to discover and further emerging opera singers, providing them with training and performance experience at the Filene Center and Barns. With Wolf Trap tickets from, you have a chance to witness history in the making with the next big opera singer.

Wolf Trap began with a donation from Catherine Filene Shouse, who had the former farm preserved as a park. Congress accepted the gift in 1966 and authorized the Wolf Trap Farm Park as the first national park for the performing arts. Shouse originally acquired the property in 1930 to offer her children a weekend retreat from their Georgetown, Washington D.C. home. By 1956, the property consisted of 168 acres. The park’s name was changed to The Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 2002. Records of the Wolf Trap name stretch back to a 1739 survey and early records indicate that wolves ran wild in the area and bounties were granted for trapping them.

The first performance at the Filene Center was called Musical Theatre Cavalcade, a history of musical theater, directed by Robert Lewis, a Broadway director and founder of The Actors Studio. President Nixon’s wife attended the opening night and invited the entire cast to the White House for a reception afterward. Other notable performances include a 1976 Scottish Military Tattoo performance at the Filene Center with Britain’s Prince Philip in attendance; a 1977 performance from the People’s Republic of China performing arts ensemble that included acrobats and dancers, one of the first cross-cultural exchanges between China and the US; and the National Folk Festival, which was held on the park grounds from 1971 until the early 1980s. Other notable performances include the opera War and Peace, the Royal Ballet, and the US National Symphony Orchestra’s 1812 Overture.

A typical season at Wolf Trap includes a wide variety of musical performances like pop, country, folk and blues. Orchestra, dance, theater, opera and performance art can also be seen on a regular basis.
