The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan (H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado). One of their best-known works and the only one to have had its premiere in the United States, the show debuted at New York City's Fifth Avenue Theatre on December 31, 1979. It was embraced by audiences and critics and remains an often-produced show in the theatre community. Tunes such as "I am the very model of a modern Major-General" have made their way into the musical theatre canon. In the late 1800s on the coast of Cornwall, England, Frederic celebrates turning twenty-one and, consequently, his release from an apprenticeship with a band of pirates. Being such a dutiful man, Frederic regrets to announce that once he is free, he will have to work to destroy the pirates. Once alone with Ruth, the band's maid, a group of beautiful girls approach the pirates' hideout. Having never seen another woman besides Ruth, Frederic is spellbound by the beauty of one of the girls, Mabel, and the two fall in love. When the pirates return, they capture the girls, intending to marry them, but their father, a Major-General, comes and appeals to the pirates' weakness by falsely claiming that he too, like them, is an orphan. Sympathizing with him, they let the girls go.
Later, the Major-General feels guilty about lying to the pirates and the girls encourage the police to brace for their impending attack on the criminals. Frederic, who is to lead the police against the pirates, encounters Ruth and the Pirate King, who claim that his contract binds him to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and since he was born on February 29th in a leap year, he won't reach that milestone until he is in his eighties. Instantly convinced to rejoin the pirates, he also feels compelled to reveal the Major-General's lie. The wrath of the pirates can be grave, but an unexpected twist may just let everyone find a happy ending.
