About the San Antonio Spurs
Founded in 1967, the Spurs have a unique place in basketball history. The Spurs were originally members of the American Basketball Association, but joined the NBA in 1976, following the ABA-NBA merger. Though the Spurs never won an ABA championship, they are the only team from the ABA that has won an NBA title.
Since joining the NBA, the Spurs have missed the playoffs just three times in franchise history. Amazingly, the Spurs have won the NBA championship more times (five) than they have missed the playoffs entirely.
Naturally, the Spurs have developed rivalries over time. The Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets are Lone Star State rivals with the Spurs. All three Texas-based teams play in the Southwest division -- so there are plenty of chances for fans to get out to the arena and watch the rivalries intensify.
San Antonio also developed a rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers in the early 2000s. The Spurs and Lakers' rivalry was fueled by both teams' dominance, as the Spurs won titles in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014 while the Lakers won the NBA championship in 2000, 2001, 2002 and again in 2009.
