William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous plays ever written and performed. Written in Shakespeare's early career, it has become the quintessential story of star-crossed lovers and has been hugely influential in Western culture. Nowadays, it is a staple of theatre companies and schools all over the world. Several popular film adaptations have been made, including an Oscar-nominated 1936 version by George Cukor, Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film, and Baz Luhrmann's 1996 modern version (styled Romeo + Juliet) starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
The story of Romeo and Juliet has also been used as the inspiration for other works, including the musical West Side Story and the popular Disney film High School Musical. In 2013, a Broadway revival cast Tony nominee Condola Rashad (The Trip to Bountiful) opposite film star Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings) as the leading couple. In Verona, Italy, there is a street brawl among supporters of the Montague and Capulet families, who are in a nasty feud. Prince Escalus announces that any further breach of peace is punishable by death. Meanwhile, Count Paris tries to persuade Sir Capulet to let him marry his daughter, Juliet, and plans to attend the Capulets' ball. At the ball, Romeo (of the house of Montague) arrives, hoping to find a lovely young woman named Rosaline, but instead meets and falls instantly in love with Juliet. After the ball, they pledge their love to one another; they are secretly married by Friar Laurence the next day.
Later, Juliet's cousin Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel for sneaking into the Capulet ball. Romeo refuses to fight him since they are now kinsmen, and so Romeo's friend Mercutio fights on his behalf and is killed. Stricken with grief and anger, Romeo challenges and kills Tybalt, causing the Prince to exile him with the threat of execution upon his return. When Juliet refuses her parents' direction to marry Paris, they threaten to disown her. With nowhere left to turn, Romeo and Juliet know that desperate measures are called for if they are to be together.
