Riverdance is a theatrical show of traditional Irish step-dancing performed to a varied musical score. What began as an interval performance at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin has exploded into an international phenomenon that has thrilled millions of people all over the world. From the first performance, which featured the great Michael Flatley, who would later create Lord of the Dance, it has received standing ovations and widespread acclaim. Sold-out engagements in Dublin, London, and even on Broadway at the historic Gershwin Theatre have been followed by Eurpoean and United States tours, which bring the magic of Riverdance to the masses.
The show itself consists of a series of scenes that essentially represent the history and culture of Ireland and the Irish immigration to America. The scenes of Act 1 (representing myth and culture) run as follows: "Reel Around the Sun" celebrates the sun's gift of light and life; "The Heart's Cry" represents the natural yearning of our hearts to each other; "The Countless Cathleen" shows the fierce and loving nature of women; "Caoineadh Chu Chulainn" lauds and mourns the loss of a great Celtic warrior; "Thunderstorm" exhibits the intense power of the elements; "Firedance" symbolizes the blazing beauty of fire; "Shivna" communicates the myth of a man hopelessly pursuing the alluring female spirit of the moon; "Slip Into Spring - The Harvest" shows the turning of the seasons and celebrates growth and rebirth; "Riverdance" portrays the genesis of the land through the growth of the great river and ends with a joyous celebration.
The scenes in Act 2 (representing history and immigration) run as follows: "American Wake" shows how famine and ambition for a greater life led many to move across the sea, tearing apart communities and families; "Lift the Wings" represents the struggle of being torn from the homeland; "Heal Their Hearts - Freedom" portrays the introduction of the Irish dance art to the new land and its fusion into the culture; "Trading Taps" reveals how the financial struggles of immigrants are offset by pride and hope; "Macedonian Morning" looks at the nature of what's familiar and what's strange and how these definitions change in a new life; "Andalucia" uses spicy Latin dance rhythms to communicate the heat of the big city; "Oscail an Doras (Open The Door)" celebrates the gift of singing as a diversion from a laborious life; "Slow Air and Tunes" examines the ways in which the child of the emigrant yearns for the parents' home and how the child brings a newly forged, hybrid identity; "Heartland" follows the emigrant's child, who brings cherished memories to the motherland; "Finale" celebrates a new, cosmopolitan identity and a comfort in finding "home" anywhere.
