Pepe Aguilar wass born in San Antonio, Texas, a sun-baked nirvana for those who love to bask in the hot peppers, cantinas, and fiery sunsets of America's latin fringe. Aguilar is of Mexican decent and a master of a musical form known as ranchera, which is believed to have originated in the State of Jalisco, and has close ties to mariachi music. He is the son of Mexican entertainment stars Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre. Agular's creative roots are both authentic and pure; his father is a singer and an actor, who took his family to Puerto Rico for several years, back when he was struggling to make it in showbusiness. This proved to be fertile ground, and certanly helped the family bolster their latin awareness, and merge their Mexican culture with that of the beautiful island in the sea. Aguilar made his singing debut in 1973 in front of a large crowd at Madison Square Garden. He remembers being scared by the crowd and he admits to actually crying when confronted with the adoring throng. Eventually, he became part of his father's act, and found solid singing feet as a young man.
Aguilar was a member of a teenage rock band called "Equs", but they did not last as a unit. Experience in the band led to Aguilar making his first CD, and his early influences he cites as Pink Floyd, The Who, and other giants of that era. Aguilar's 1990 album saw him debut in style, and Pepe Aguilar con tambora ("Pepe Aguilar with a Conga") made more than a few exotic ripples in Mexico and Latin America. He released several more CDs into the 1990s, and even tried his hand at the production side of things, his early showbusiness backgroud helping him to feel comfortable with all aspects of the recording and performing process. Aguilar started two record labels and produced songs for Lupita D'Alessio, Lupe Pineda, and Julieta Venegas, plus many more artists.
In 1998, Aguilar released Por mujeres como tu ("Because of Women Like You"). The record hit two million copies worldwide and was on the Billboard hits list for fifty-two straight weeks, bringing a fresh glow to what was already a momentous rise to stardom. As the millennium turned, Pepe gathered pace, and began releasing more work, including the 2000 hit album, Por una mujer bonita ("Because of a Beautiful Woman"), for which he was given a Latin Grammy award. He now has a total nine Grammy nominations, as well as nominations for other awards in various musical spheres.
Aguilar has also served as a catalyst for the enhancement of latino culture and visibility of that culture on the world stage. He was the first Mexican regional music singer to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. On September 15, 2003, Mexican Independence Day, Aguilar was given the symbolic keys to the city of Los Angeles. An estimated number of 20,000 people watched the ceremony.
He joined the Sony label in mid-2004 and continued making new albums. No soy de nadie ("I Don't Belong to Anyone") was released later on that year, and again the fans were treated to a blistering array of traditional Mexican sounds which conjured gorgeous images of that mysterious and triumphant nation. Aguilar recently sang the Mexican national anthem before the sensational Floyd Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya fight, proving his childhood fear of large crowds is most certainly over.
