The Pro Bowl is an all-star game in the National Football League. It involves matching the top players of the AFC against the top players of the NFC. Since 2010, the game has taken place near the end of the NFL season, on the weekend between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl. In previous years, it took place on the weekend after the Super Bowl. Since 2008, a player in the game is awarded the MVP award.
The first Pro All-Star game took place in January of 1939 at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. A concept was used where an all-star team would face that year’s league champion. It was in June of 1950 that it was transformed into the “Pro Bowl” concept. All-star teams from each of the two divisions would play each other under the coach of each of the division champions. From 1951 to 1972 the game was hosted in Los Angeles, California and then moved to various sites in following years. Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii hosted the game from 1980 to 2009 and still remains the primary site.
Player selection for the Pro Bowl has been determined by the coaches, players, and fans. Before 1995, only coaches and players made selections, but now fans can vote on the NFL website. In 2016, instead of playing within their conference, the players will be placed in a draft pool and chosen by team captains to make up the teams. Originally, the coaches were determined by choosing from the teams that lost in the AFC and NFC Championship. It was then changed to the coaching staffs of the team that lost in the Divisional Playoffs with the best regular season record.
We have Pro Bowl tickets here if you want to be at one of the premier NFL events of the year. The Pro Bowl is the all-star game of the National Football League and it is always an exciting match. The first Pro Bowl game was played in January of 1939 in Los Angeles. It was continued until 1942 until it was suspended due to World War II, and play resumed again in 1951. It has been called the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl since the combining of the AFL and NFL in 1970. The Pro Bowl pits the best players from the American Football Conference against the best players from the National Football Conference in a battle to determine what conference is the best. As it showcases the best players in the game, Pro Bowl tickets are normally some of the most sought-after in football. The Pro Bowl was played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii for 30 seasons consecutively, until 2010 when it was played in Miami. The Pro Bowl has traditionally been played the week after the Super Bowl. However for Super Bowl XLIV in 2010 it was played the week before the Super Bowl, and Super Bowl contending teams did not send players. For the 2011 season the Pro Bowl game will be held once again in Hawaii.
Football players can be selected to participate in the Pro Bowl through various ways. Coaches, players and fans each account for a third of the votes. In order to be eligible for consideration the player must have been on the initial roster at the beginning of the season. Alternates are also chosen in the event of a player declines the invitation to play. Until 2008, an award was given for the best offensive and defensive player, now however they give a MVP (most valuable player) award to the best player. The rules are altered in order to ensure player safety, ensuring the Pro Bowl is a higher-scoring affair than a normal NFL game. That means that you have a great chance to see a real Shootout when you buy tickets for the Pro Bowl. A couple of rule changes for the game include no blitzing, no rushing any kicks, intentional grounding is legal, and no motion or shifting by offense.
As the game sees the best players in both conferences, the Pro Bowl is usually a pretty closely matched game. The NFC leads the modern day Pro Bowl record 22-21. The AFC has scored the least amount of points ever in a game with 3 and the NFC with the most point ever in a game with 55. The Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts have had the most players ever win the MVP award with seven, while the Bills, Panthers and Broncos have never had a player win the MVP. Two legendary coaches are tied for most Pro Bowl appearances John Madden and Tom Landry. While the most Pro Bowl wins for a coach belongs to Bill Cowher. For the 2007/2008 Pro Bowl Sean Taylor was selected as a starting safety shortly after he was fatally shot, the NFC took the field with only 10 players on their opening drive. It was the first and only time this has ever happened.
