New York City Ballet is one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world. It has the largest repertoire of any American company, often staging 80 or more ballets per year. It is also the first in the United States to have two permanent venue engagements: its principal location at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater in New York City, and another at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York, where it presents its summer season.
The idea of New York City Ballet was conceived of by Lincoln Kirstein in the early decades of the twentieth century. In a time when foreign touring groups dominated the ballet scene, he longed for a national ballet where American dancers could train under the greatest masters and perform a modern repertory. When he met now-legendary dancer/choreographer George Balanchine in 1933, he knew that he was the right person to help his dream become a reality. Some developmental years followed, during which Balanchine got the school running. In 1948, he invited Jerome Robbins, now a legend in choreography of many forms, including for Broadway shows like Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story, to join as the Assistant Artistic Director. Together, the two founding choreographers set the foundations for New York City Ballet and began its tradition of excellence.
Today, New York City Ballet features some of the best dancers in the world and performs an extensive library of works, including favorites like Romeo + Juliet and The Nutcracker (George Balanchine's version, of course) as well as newer compositions. The company also tours in the United States (to venues such as The Kennedy Center) and internationally, spreading the beauty of American ballet worldwide.
