About the Theatre:

Along with the Lyceum Theatre, the New Amsterdam Theatre is one of the two oldest currently operating houses on Broadway. After being designed by the Herts & Tallant firm, it opened in November of 1903 with a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. For years, it presented plays, musicals, operettas, and several iterations of the Ziegfeld Follies, which included the talents of the likes of Olive Thomas, the Eaton siblings, and even Fanny Brice, the inspiration for the musical Funny Girl. After operating as a movie theatre from 1937 to 1985, the theatre seemed to be doomed to decay into oblivion. But after being purchased and renovated by Disney Theatrical Productions, it re-opened on April 2, 1997. By November 13 of that same year, a musical that would revitalize the theatre opened: the hugely successful adaptation of Disney's The Lion King. In 2006, it welcomed another Disney mega-hit, Mary Poppins, which would prove another family-friendly audience favorite.
