About the Show:
Matilda is a stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1988 children's novel (which also spawned a 1996 feature film starring Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, Embeth Davidtz, and Pam Ferris). It follows one prodigious little girl who is abused at home and at school but takes refuge in books and learning. When she discovers she has telekinetic powers, she vows to stand up for what's right.
Featuring music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly, Matilda the Musical was developed by England's Royal Shakespeare Company and debuted in the West End on November 24, 2011. It received widespread critical and popular acclaim, winning 7 Olivier Awards--the most ever won by a single musical. Following its success in London, it was announced that it would transfer to Broadway in the spring of 2013. Buy your Matilda tickets today and see this imaginative musical story performed live. Matilda Wormwood is born to disinterested and selfish parents: a mother who is obsessed with television (especially ballroom dancing shows) and a crooked car salesman father who wanted a brother for his crude son, Michael. By the age of 5, Matilda escapes her unhappy life by reading voraciously and gets back at her ignorant family in small, untraceable ways (putting hydrogen peroxide in her father's hair oil to give him bright green hair, for example). When Matilda starts school, her kind teacher, Miss Honey, recommends that she be placed with older students, but the surly, mannish headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, refuses to make the exception as she believes that children are not special; they are all maggots. Miss Honey even goes so far as to visit Matilda's parents, by they make it clear they couldn't care less about her. Back at school, a young boy named Bruce Bogtrotter steals a piece of Miss Trunchbull's chocolate cake and is sentenced to not only eat the whole thing, which he does, but to be placed in the dreaded Chokey, Miss Trunchbull's small compartment full of nails and broken glass, for hours on end.
As Matilda grows to know more of Miss Trunchbull's wrath and finds no solace at home, she vows to make things right. One day, while Miss Trunchbull is verbally abusing her, Matilda focuses her energy and discovers that she has the ability to move objects with her mind. Her first exercise: she knocks over Miss Trunchbull's water jug, soaking her and getting the newt another child had hidden in it into her knickers. Temporarily satisfied, Matilda accompanies Miss Honey home one night for tea and discovers that she is forced to live a meager existence by her aunt: Miss Trunchbull. Get some Matilda the Musical tickets to discover how Matilda uses her powers to conquer the tyrants in her life and make the world better for Miss Honey, the students, and herself.
