Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare's most popular and widely-read plays. Following the story of an ambitious man and his opportunistic wife on a quest to seize control of Scotland, it is a tale of superstition, morals, and fate.
Macbeth, referred to by many theatre insiders as "The Scottish Play" (because of a legend that its very name is cursed), has been produced many times in venues all over the world, including on Broadway in 1988 starring Christopher Plummer ("The Sound of Music"), in 2000 starring Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier"), and in 2008 starring Patrick Stewart ("X-Men"). An innovative 2013 revival cast Alan Cumming (Cabaret) as a psychiatric patient performing the entire show, including all of the characters, himself. Later in 2013, a revival starring Ethan Hawke was announced to play at Lincoln Center. Order tickets right away for your chance to see this classic show in a fresh performance live.Plot Synopsis:
In medieval Scotland, Macbeth is a star soldier in King Duncan's army. He hears a prophecy from three witches that he is destined to become king, but that future kings will not be descended from him but from his army comrade, Banquo. When Macbeth hears that Duncan has nominated his son Malcolm as his heir instead of him, he is overtaken by paranoia and ambition.
Back at his castle, Macbeth is persuaded by his wife that killing the king is the best way to ensure his destiny comes true. When King Duncan comes for a royal visit, he fights through his hesitations and kills him in his sleep, leaving Lady Macbeth even more emboldened than before. Despite his success, he is immediately haunted by his crime.
Maintaining his innocence, once the murder is discovered, Macbeth pledges with the other nobles to avenge it. Meanwhile, Duncan's two sons, Donalbain and Malcolm, flee to Ireland and England, respectively. In an attempt to foil the witches' other prophecy, Macbeth has Banquo killed, but his son, Fleance, escapes alive. Spurred by an appearance by Banquo's ghost, Macbeth's conscience begins to ravage him, despite the whisperings of his ambitious wife.
Bogged down with guilt but in too deep to stop, Macbeth finds himself caught in a web of destiny, suspicion, and danger.
