Little Shop of Horrors Information
About the Show:
Little Shop of Horrors is a musical based on the cult classic 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. The show has elements of comedy and horror, and the score has elements of 1960's rock, doo-wop, and Motown. The eclectic, quirky nature of the show has earned it a considerable cult following, and songs like "Suddenly Seymour," "Skid Row (Downtown," and "Somewhere That's Green" have become standards.
Little Shop premiered off-Broadway on May 6, 1982 and ran for an astounding 2,209 performances, through November 1, 1987. The show really caught on: a West End production opened in 1983; a film version starring Rick Moranis as Seymour, original Audrey Ellen Greene reprising her role, and Steve Martin as crazed dentist Orin was released in 1986; and several revivals followed, most notably one in 2003 starring Hunter Foster (Urinetown) and Kerry Butler (Xanadu). There was even a short-lived Saturday morning children's cartoon based on the franchise. The show remains a popular choice for smaller theatres. Seymour Krelborn is a nerdy young man who works at a run-down flower shop with Audrey, a pretty blonde with tacky fashion sense but a good heart. Both live in skid row and long for a day when they can escape the urban depression of their lives. Seymour finds a strange, Venus fly trap-like plant at the market and names it Audrey II, reflecting his secret love for his co-worker. Much to Seymour's confusion, the plant's health begins to decline until one day, he pricks his finger and the plant noticeable reacts. He soon learns that the plant needs blood to survive and as he feeds it, it grows into a neighborhood attraction and brings more business to the shop. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Audrey's dentist boyfriend, Orin, beats her and she secretly has feelings for Seymour, wishing for an idyllic suburban life with him.
As Seymour becomes more famous and the shop's business grows, the owner, Mr. Mushnik, decides that he needs to keep Seymour and the plant at all costs. So he offers to adopt Seymour and make him a partner in the business. Having always wanted a family, Seymour gladly accepts despite Mushnik's former poor treatment of him. Soon, Seymour begins to have trouble finding enough blood to feed Audrey II. Beginning to starve, the plant begins to speak, demanding to be fed and offering to make Seymour's dreams come true. Though he initially refuses, when he witnesses Orin abusing Audrey, he agrees to make him the first victim. At a late-night appointment, Seymour can't bring himself to shoot Orin, but luckily, Orin accidentally dies from gassing himself with nitrous oxide. Seymour feeds his body to Audrey II, who gobbles it up and grows to gigantic proportions.
As Seymour and Audrey try to keep up with business, they finally admit their feelings for one another. Though Seymour suspects that this is due to his newfound fame, they plan to leave town and start a new life together. When Mr. Mushnik's suspicions grow and he tells Seymour he is going to make a statement to the police about Orin's disappearance, Audrey II convinces Seymour to trick him into getting close enough to be eaten. Once Mushnik is dead, Seymour is racked with guilt and fear at what the plant will do next. When he discovers that Audrey will love him even without the plant, he plans to destroy it.
Later that night, Audrey looks for Seymour at the shop and the plant tricks her into watering him. He mortally wounds her and when Seymour arrives, she asks him to feed her to the plant so they can be together forever. He solemnly honors her request. The next day, a man from World Botanical Enterprises arrives and offers to sell clippings of Audrey II across the country. Seymour realizes that the plant has been planning to take over the planet all along and tries to kill it, finally charging into its gaping mouth with a machete as a last resort.
