La Cage aux Folles is a wacky, campy show in which wild irreverence and classic comedy blend with the poignant portrayal of realistic and touching human relationships (thanks to Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein's ingenious book, which draws on the same source material as the film The Birdcage, starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane). It has a reputation for staging some of the most elaborate and impressive dance numbers and showing off some of the most opulent and flashy costumes ever to grace a Broadway stage. In addition, its superb score has launched such classic songs as "The Best of Times" and "I Am What I Am." Its original 1983 Broadway debut received six Tony Awards out of nine nominations, including the coveted trinity of Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. And it is the only show whose Broadway incarnations have all won Best Production Tony Awards (including the 2004 and 2010 revivals). Critics and audiences agree that this show is truly something special. So get your La Cage aux Folles tickets today and experience all the touching beauty and gender-bending fun of its highly unconventional, but loving, family.Plot Synopsis:
As the curtain rises, Georges welcomes the audience to his night club, "La Cage aux Folles," and introduces the club's chorus, a group of drag queens called Les Cagelles. George has owned and operated the club for many years with his partner, Albin, who also headlines at the club as "Zaza." The couple lives above the club with their sassy butler (sometimes maid) Jacob.
While Albin is getting ready to perform his show-stopping number "(A Little More) Mascara," Georges' twenty-four-year-old son, Jean-Michel, comes calling with news that he has gotten engaged. Georges is surprised and hesitant to accept the sudden development, but Jean-Michel assures him of his love for his fiancee, Anne, and says that her parents want to come over for dinner to meet him. Unfortunately, her conservative father is the head of a political party that seeks to close all of the local drag clubs, so Jean-Michel lies to him and says that Georges is a former diplomat. He also requests that Albin not attend because of his flamboyantly gay mannerisms, asking Georges instead to invite his real mother, Sybil, who he has not seen since Jean-Michel's birth.
In order to break the news to him gently, Georges takes Albin for a romantic walk on the shore. But before he can come out with the request, Albin rushes back to the club to make it onstage for the next show. While Albin is onstage, Georges and Jean-Michel frantically re-decorate the house in a more simple and muted fashion. In his dressing room, Albin notices them taking his gowns from the apartment, and Georges is finally forces to reveal the truth. He is surprised to find that Albin does not blow up, but rather remains silent and takes the stage. He asks the Cagelles to leave and sings a heartfelt and impassioned song ("I Am What I Am") expressing that he is proud of who he is and will not change for anyone. He hurls his wig at Georges and storms off.
The next day, Georges apologizes and spends the day trying to train Albin to behave in a more macho fashion so he can come to dinner as Jean-Michel's "Uncle Al," but this proves to be humorously difficult. The lifestyle the couple has been leading proves very hard to change when Anne arrives with her stuffy parents, and Jean-Michel desperately tries to hold the charade together, afraid of the judgment of his future in-laws.
