About Il Divo
Il Divo is the brainchild of Simon Cowell, pop guru and American Idol curmudgeon; he was inspired by a collaboration between Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli's classical crossover "Con te Partiro." The Idol mastermind carried out a worldwide search between 2001 and 2003 for international singers willing to accompany this style. It was then he discovered American tenor David Miller, Spanish Baritone Carlos Marin, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler and French pop artist Sebastien Izambard. Honing in on the fairly new operatic pop subgenre of music, Il Divo has reached sales of 22 million with six albums under their belt! Singing in English, Spanish French, Italian and Latin, Il Divo has received worldwide acclaim for thier highly diverse sound.
But don't think that Simon did all the work. Each member of Il Divo has a well developed past in musical training and performance. Urs Buhler began singing in a local choir at the young age of five, he also played the violin, clarinet, piano, drums and guitar. He later studied voice at the Sweelink Conservatorium and continued training under French Tenor Christian Papis and Stockholm's Royal Opera tenor Gosta Winbergh.
Sebastien Izambard, the pop star of the group, had a solo slbum in circulation before Il Divo and he is the only member that is not classically trained in opera or operatic pop. Regardless, this self taught musician is a cultivated composer and highly regarded piano and guitar player.
David Miller, an American Tenor, studied Vocal Performance and Opera Theatre at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Miller can add Il Divo to his already extensive repetoire of music including: Manon, La Traviata and La Boheme.
Carlos Marin, a Spanish baritone, recorded his first album when he was eight years old, his second album was released two years later. Between the ages of 15 and 20 Marin received numerous awards for his vocal abilities as he dilligently studied piano and solfeo. Having studied under Alfredo Kraus and Jaume Aragall, Marin has seen fame in musicals such as Les Miserables and movies such as The Nightmare Before Christmas.
It is clear that Il Divo is a seasoned group of music masters. They released their sixth studio album The Promise in November 2008 and it was labeled as their "richest and most diverse album to date." Covering songs by ABBA and Leonard Cohen, The Promise was an epic crowd pleaser.
2011's Wicked Game and 2013's A Musical Affair have brought new audiences into the fold and Il Divo aims to please. Their new musical promises to wow audiences already accustomed to their artistry and technique with performances designed to pay homage to the greatest musicals of all time.
