He began training at only seven years old with his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. and uncles Jeff and Roger Mayweather. His first professional fight was in 1996 when he was 19. He is now an undefeated American boxer. Mayweather is a five division world champion, has eight world titles, and won the Lineal championship of three different weight classes. He won fighter or the year both in 1998 and 2007. Mayweather was also named ESPY’s best fighter in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012. In 2012, Floyd Mayweather was named one of the 50 highest paid athletes.
Previous Mayweather Fights
Mayweather fought Saul Alvarez in September 2013, when Mayweather retained the WBA Super Light Middleweight title by defeating Alvarez. Mayweather won the fight in a 12-round majority decision -- with one of the three judges scoring the fight as a draw. Still, Mayweather won, retained his titles and remained undefeated.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. puts his undefeated 42-0 (26 KOs) record on the line against Miguel “Junito” Cotto, 37-2 (30KOs) in a Cinco de Mayo Showdown at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena. Current WBC welterweight champion Mayweather, the five-division world champion with seven world titles, is considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, and Mayweather tickets are a sought-after commodity. Mayweather’s most recent fight against Victor Ortiz ended in controversy: Ortiz leaned in for a hug after a break in the fight due to a head butt and was rewarded with a knockout blow to the head. Boxing fans will get to see Mayweather take on Puerto Rican powerhouse Miguel Cotto, a formidable WBA junior middleweight with only two career losses.
One of Cotto’s losses came against Manny Pacquiao in a 2009 welterweight bout when he was stopped by Pacquiao in the twelfth round. Cotto beat Yuri Foreman in June of 2010 to capture the WBA title, knocked out Ricardo Mayorga in the 12th round in March of 2011 and recently stopped Antonio Margarito in the twelfth round in December of 2011. Cotto, represented by promoter Top Rank for his entire career, fights for the first time as a free agent. The fight will be Mayweather's second junior middleweight contest; he won the 2008 WBC title with a twelve round split decision on May of 2007.
Pacquiao had also been eyeing a Cotto fight this year for a June 9 rematch of their 2009 fight, but an argument over 3 pounds was the fight’s undoing. While Pacquiao refused to fight at a weight greater than 147 pounds, Cotto would only drop to a weight of 150 pounds. Mayweather, however, had no issue with the fighting weight: “If I fight Cotto, I want him to be at a weight where he’s comfortable,” he said. There had been some speculation that Mayweather and Pacquiao might finally meet in ring before Mayweather begins a 90-day jail sentence at the Clark County Detention Center for a September 2010 domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of three of his children. However, the selection of Cotto as an opponent ensures that the two won’t meet until the fall at the earliest.
Mayweather announced the Cotto fight at a February 1, 2012 appearance before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to explain his recent plea of guilty to the domestic abuse charge. Mayweather was supposed to begin his sentence on January 6, but his report date was deferred to June 1 after his attorney argued that he should be allowed to fight on May 5 in order to honor an existing MGM Grand deal and because a Mayweather fight would inject $100 million into the Las Vegas economy.
