With more than 60 million albums sold worldwide, Boyz II Men are the most successful R&B groups of all time, known for their emotional ballads and mesmerizing a cappella harmonies. Since day one, Boyz II Men tickets have been some of the most popular in R&B. Boyz II Men started out as a quartet on Motown Records in the early 1990’s, with original members Nathan Morris (baritone), Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman (tenors), and Michael McCary (bass). (McCary left the group in 2003 due to health issues). The group won four Grammys in the 1990’s, was nominated for two Grammys in 2009 and was recognized by Billboard Magazine as the most successful musical group of the 1990’s. They were also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in January of 2012.
The group’s first number 1 single was 1992’s “End of the Road,” which topped charts around the world and stayed on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks, breaking a record held by Elvis Presley. Further hits like “I’ll Make Love to You” and “One Sweet Day (with Mariah Carey)” broke that record again with “One Sweet Day” holding the all-time mark with 16 weeks at the top of the charts. Other songs like “On Bended Knee” also reached number one and Boyz II Men became the third artist to replace themselves at the top of the charts, joining The Beatles and Elvis.
Boyz II Men originally formed at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts in 1988 as a quintet under the name Unique Attraction, inspired by the group New Edition. In fact, the name Boyz II Men was taken from a New Edition song. In 1989, Boyz II Men went backstage after a Bell Biv DeVoe concert and met Michael Bivins, a member of the group and aspiring producer. They sang an a cappella version of New Edition’s “Can you Stand the Rain?” on the spot and were eventually signed by Bivins to Motown Records.
Cooleyhighharmony, Boyz II Men’s first album, was released on Motown in 1991 and produced by Bivins, with a drum-heavy new jack sound and soulful harmonies. The style was dubbed “hip hop doo wop” by Bivins and the group, as all four members alternated leads and traded bars in each song, a unique arrangement that became a hallmark of the group. Their first single “Motownphilly” and second single, an a cappella cover of G. C. Cameron’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” both were number one R&B hits and top five pop hits. Cooleyhighharmony sold more than nine million copies and the group won the 1992 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a duo or group with vocals.
Boyz II Men took a brief break from touring as MC Hammer’s opening act of the 2 Legit 2 Quit Tour in 1992 to record the single “End of the Road,” which was co-written and produced by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds for the Eddie Murphy film Boomerang. The song appeared on the soundtrack for Boomerang and would rise to number one on the charts.
In 1992, Boyz II Men released their second album, II, which sold more than 12 million copies in the United States, becoming one of the best selling R&B albums ever and one of the biggest albums of the 1990’s. The singles off the II album – including “On Bended Knee,” I’ll Make Love to You,” and “Water Runs Dry” – were instant classics and shot to the top of the charts. The group won two Grammy Awards in 1995 for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance by a duo or group with vocals.
Boyz II Men released their third album, Evolution, in 1997, selling 3 million copies. The singles “Four Seasons of Loneliness” and “A Song for Mamma” were top ten hits and the group was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1998. Boyz II Men released several studio records and greatest hits collections over the next few years, as well as albums featuring covers of R&B classics. The group also sung with Justin Bieber in his movie “Never Say Never,” appeared in a music video with him, and sung “Fa La La” on the Justin Bieber Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe. With so much acclaim and success its no wonder Boyz to Men tickets are as hot as they are!
In 2011, Boyz II Men released Twenty, named after their twenty years in the business, which includes 13 new songs and 8 re-recorded Boyz II Men classics.
“We started with a pure love for music, so to be here 20 years later and still doing what we love has been a pure blessing,” said Wanya Morris. Seems pretty obvious that as long as Boyz 2 Men are on tour, tickets are going to be in high-demand.
