About Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is one of the most influential artists in decades. There are musicians and then there's Lauryn Hill, a musician the likes of which we haven't ever seen. Lauryn Hill started her music career as a member of the Fugees with Wyclef Jean, and ever since, she's been among the most beloved artists in R&B and in fact all of music. After moving on from the Fugees, Lauryn Hill dropped one of the most beloved albums in decades.

In 1998, Lauryn Hill released her first solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which earned Hill "Album of the Year" as well as "Best New Artists" at the Grammy Awards. It was immediately a smash hit, debuting at #1 on Billboard and broke the record for sales sold in the first week by a female artists. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill earned ten Grammy nominations and won five, setting female artists records for both. It would go on to reach Gold status, and was certified eight times platinum. It is one of the most influential albums of the decade, and is hailed as a kick-starting the "neo soul" sub-genre. "Miseducation" combines several influences of Hill's, with aspects of R&B, hip hop, soul, reggae, gospel and more all playing a part in the album. The album features the smash hit "Doo Wop (That Thing)," which stayed at the #1 on the Billboard charts for three weeks, staying in the top 100 for 21 weeks. Other singles off "Miseducation" include singles "Ex-Factor" and "Everything is Everything." A Lauryn Hill Tour promoting the album started in early 1999 and was called The Miseducaton Tour. Lauren Hill tickets for the show sold out immediately, on dates with Outkast as the opening act.

Following the release of the album, Lauryn Hill shied away from public attention, however, in 2001, she recorded MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, which was recorded on July 21, 2001 at MTV Studios in Times Square, New York. The album reached #3 on Billboard 200 and was certified platinum four weeks after its release. What only the most devout fans of Lauryn Hill know is that she is also an actress. She acted in As the World Turns and in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit where she got a chance to showcase her singing skills.
