The stage adaptation of Sister Act is based on the hit 1992 film of the same name, starring Whoopi Goldberg. The show originally premiered in London's West End, where it was very successful and earned 4 Laurence Olivier Award nominations; it has since spawned several other international productions. The setting is 1978 Philadelphia, and aspiring singer Deloris Can Cartier is performing in night clubs, hoping for her big break. When she learns that her gangster boyfriend, Shank's promises to introduce her to a record producer have been lies, she decides to break up with him and try to make it on her own. When she finally goes to confront him, she stumbles upon him and his goons committing a serious crime, and seeks refuge at the police station. The police put her into the witness protection program and she goes undercover in a local convent. But Deloris' star shines brightly and soon she finds herself leading the choir and causing quite a media sensation with her unconventional musical direction.
